ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
I have been involved in photojournalism and documentary work for over
twenty years. Born and based in Belfast Northern Ireland I have worked
for newspapers and magazines locally, nationally and internationally
at freelance, staff and editorial management level. Covering some
of the most violent years of the conflict my work in Ireland won
me many professional awards for my pictures.
In recent years I have concentrated more on
project based documentary work both on a commissioned and personal
basis. This has seen me travel extensively with most recent work taking
me to the former Soviet Republic of Moldova as well as work in Cuba and
Vietnam. This work has been extensively exhibited.
Closer to home I have worked with an extensive
array of community based groups and NGOs facilitating photography
workshops and leading a number of community documentary projects. These
include work with the terminally ill in the Northern Ireland Hospice
and a range of disabled groups with my work for the Northern Ireland
Equality Commission.
My impressive portfolio won me a place on the
prestigious MA Documentary Photography course at the University of
Wales Newport where I worked with leading British documentary
photographers such as Martin Parr, Paul Seawright and Magnum's Donovan
Wylie.
I have completed an extensive project around
issues of youth employment, travel restrictions in the post 9/11 world
and examined the vast array of physical artifacts relating to the
conflict in Ireland. The main focus of my present documentary project
work follows on from my PhD research and is based around victims of the recent conflict in and about
Northern Ireland.
I am a visiting lecturer in Photography at The University of Ulster Belfast and teach on a number of photography courses at South Eastern Regional College.
